THE SHORT VERSION

Treat ingredient compatibility as a model-specific check. Dry-grain flour mills are not interchangeable with nut-butter grinders.

Wheat and other familiar grains

Begin with the grain names the manufacturer explicitly lists. Note whether the ingredient must be whole, dry, hulled, or otherwise prepared. A familiar baking ingredient may be sold in several forms, and a mill’s instructions may distinguish between them. Keep the manufacturer’s wording with your ingredient notes so you do not rely on memory next time.

Rice and gluten-free ingredients

Some manufacturers describe rice milling, but verify the exact model and setup. The ability to process rice does not establish that the mill, grain supply, kitchen, or resulting flour is free of gluten cross-contact. If that distinction matters for your household, obtain appropriate guidance and ingredient documentation rather than relying on an equipment recommendation.

Corn and legumes need an explicit answer

Names such as corn and beans can cover ingredients with very different sizes and characteristics. Ask about your exact product and form if the manual is not clear. Never force an ingredient through a mill because a different model can handle it. Unsupported substitutions can damage equipment and leave you with an unsuitable result.

Oily seeds, nuts, and already-milled flour

Do not assume an electric flour mill can make nut butter or process oily seeds. The Classic resources specifically exclude nuts, seeds, and rolled oats and warn against re-milling flour. For other models, follow their own instructions. The Wonder Junior hand mill and WonderMill Electric have different designs and should not share an inferred ingredient list.

A repeatable checking method

Record four things: exact model, exact ingredient and form, the manufacturer source, and any required setting or preparation. If any field is unresolved, mark the ingredient “confirm first.” When the manufacturer publishes a revised manual, use that version for new decisions. This checklist is intentionally more cautious than a universal yes-or-no chart.
